10 Best Movie Musicals You Can Stream Now! | Written by Katie Daniel

Happy New Year everyone! There’s nothing I want more than to sit in an audience, hear the orchestra tuning before the house lights go down, ready to jump into a magical stagey world – or even just to have tickets for upcoming shows to look forward to…
But while 2021 looms ahead and there’s still no sign of the day when we can return to the auditorium again, we thought we should put together a list of 10 of the best movie musicals that are available to watch right now on major streaming sites.

Newsies – Disney+

Without a doubt this is my number 1 recommendation. It’s crazy how many musical fans haven’t heard of Newsies when it is one of the best shows out there with an incredible recording on Disney+. The story follows The Newsboys Strike of 1899, features the angel that is Jeremy Jordan and is full of INCREDIBLE male dancers doing tricks that’ll blow your mind!

Hamilton – Disney+

The other star player over on Disney+ is, of course, Hamilton. If you have not watched it yet – why on earth are you willing to wait for it? If you have already seen it, you know it’s good enough to watch again (and again and again…)

The Prom – Netflix

The other exciting new release is The Prom over on Netflix which is just stunning. It’s a lot of fun, filled with an incredible cast (including Meryl Streep being iconic), some laughs, some heart, great dance scenes and will definitely bring a little zazz to your living room, which we all need right now.

Dreamgirls – Netflix

One of my all time favourite movie musicals, Dreamgirls, is on Netflix. It has absolutely everything including an incredible cast, iconic soundtrack, great dance, a good story, beautiful costumes, a really fun time period and it’s just the full package. Also Beyoncé and Jennifer Hudson.

West Side Story – Netflix

Everyone loves West Side Story, right? An absolute classic and what better way to get excited for the new version of the film coming out December 2021?! The Jerome Robins choreography is iconic, as is Rita Moreno’s America and that Bernstein score is timeless.

Funny Girl – Netflix

There’s no one more iconic than Barbra Streisand and lucky for us two of her most iconic roles are available to watch online. When I first discovered Barbra it was through Rachel Berry’s eyes in Glee and that was also what drew me to want to see Funny Girl – maybe you feel the same too and want to check out what all the fuss was about from Ms Berry!

Hello, Dolly! – Disney+

And if that’s not enough Babs for you, there is also Hello, Dolly on Disney+! I was actually supposed to go and see the revival last year in London (sigh!) but while we wait for the world to get back on its feet, the movie with Streisand isn’t a bad alternative.

Singin in the Rain – BBC iPlayer

BBC iPlayer is great right now if you’re in the mood for reminiscing with the classics – they have tons of old musicals on there just now and I really enjoyed the Fred and Ginger rabbit hole that I fell down. My pick for this list, though, is the other icon Gene Kelly. Need I say anymore?

Sweeney Todd – Amazon Prime

There are a few musicals over on Prime too and if you’re not in the mood for optimism (and I do not blame you) then Sondheim is your friend and Sweeney is a great shout. It’s moody, Victorian, directed by Tim Burton and deliciously fun.

Hairspray – Amazon Prime

But I have to end the list on a happy note – the colourful joy that is Hairspray. You get 60s fashion, amazing songs, awesome dance scenes, a sparkling cast and loads of energy. A nice feel good film with lots of familiarity you can’t go wrong!

Happy watching folks!
