Capital Theatre’s Edinburgh King’s Theatre could face possible closure. The King’s is due to close for a few years to under go a much needed refurbishment. The King’s had been on target to hit it’s £25 million funding to go ahead with the old girl of leven street’s much needed makeover. However, due to inflation and the rise in buildings cost, it is now likely that this work is going to cost 20% – 30% more. This could mean The King’s will never re-open.
This is devastating news, not just for Capital Theatres as a company, but for the full of Edinburgh. The King’s Theatre is one of the capital city’s most treasured buildings, with it’s stunning John Byrne mural covering the theatre’s historic ceiling, the much loved pantomimes entertaining a million locals plus tourists each Christmas, also housing a varied programme of touring theatre from Scotland and across the globe. To lose this theatre would be a massive loss for the Scottish Theatre Industry.
Festival Director Fergus Linehan and renowned stars Alan Cumming, Gabriel Byrne, James Thieree and Brian Cox have all urged people to save the kings. Theatre Scotland is joining them in pleading with our readers and followers to spread the word and donate as much or as little as you can. Our purpose is to promote Scottish Theatre and the Edinburgh King’s Theatre is the heart of that.
