Edinburgh based youth theatre, Forth Children’s Theatre, are returning to the stage next week for their Easter production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s hit musical ‘The Sound of Music’.

Set against the backdrop of pre-World War II Austria, the story begins with Maria leaving the convent to become a governess for the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Through her warmth, kindness, and musical talent, Maria brings joy and laughter to the von Trapp household, creating a harmonious bond with the children and their stern father.
This classic musical is no stranger to the 46-year-old company, with them previously producing the show in 1994 and 2002. The company is thrilled to have a whole new generation of young people preparing to Climb Every Mountain and belt the infamous earworm Do-Re-Mi.
The Director of this upcoming production, Aoife Summers, gave us an insight into rehearsals – “The Sound of Music is a show that has captivated audiences for generations, and we can’t wait to share our fresh and exciting take on it! Watching these young stars embrace the joy of theatre has been a true pleasure, and I have no doubt that they will inspire audiences just as much as they have inspired me”.

Aoife is joined by Jack Gardner as Musical Director, with Choreographer Jayne Orchard and Assistant Choreographer Mirrin Macleay. The four creatives have promised a production that embraces the heart of the original musical, revitalizing it for modern audiences.
Forth Children’s Theatre has had notable successes over the last few years including last year’s Fringe production of ‘Everybody’s Talking About Jamie: Teen Edition’ and their 45th Anniversary Gala which garnered a 5-star review from Theatre Scotland. As one of the lowest-charging youth theatres in Scotland, they have thrived in producing future stars from working-class backgrounds in Edinburgh and the surrounding areas, whilst creating high standard productions along the way.
With this year being the 60th Anniversary of the iconic film adaptation of the musical, featuring the sublime Julie Andrews and the late great Christopher Plummer, this seems the best time for audiences to go out and relive every tremendous moment of this cherished piece of musical theatre.
You will be able to see ‘The Sound of Music’ from Wednesday 9th April to Saturday 12th April at Broughton High School. Tickets are available now from FCT’s website here –
