After an incredibly successful run in the Udderbelly in 2022 and a subsequent West-End season, Underbelly has announced today that Rob Madge will return with ‘My Son’s a Queer (But What Can You Do)’ for the 2024 Edinburgh Fringe, now in Underbelly’s largest venue – McEwan Hall.
When Rob was twelve, they attempted a full-blown Disney parade in their house for their grandma. As Rob donned wigs and played Mary Poppins, Ariel, Mickey Mouse and Belle, their dad doubled as Stage Manager, Sound Technician and Goofy. Unfortunately, Dad missed all his cues and pushed all the floats in the wrong direction. Mum mistook Aladdin for Ursula. The costumes went awry. Grandma had a nice time, though. ‘My Son’s a Queer, (But what can you do?’ is the joyous autobiographical story of social-media sensation Rob Madge as they set out to recreate that infamous parade – and this time, nobody, no, nobody is gonna rain on it.
‘My Son’s A Queer (But What Can You Do?)’ was hailed as a five star hit by Theatre Scotland when it played the 2022 Edinburgh Fringe. It’s continued success and Rob’s rising notoriety as a performer should bring audiences no doubt that this is a huge production, and the creme of the crop at this year’s festival. Make sure to get tickets as soon as possible, as no doubt they will be like gold dust as the festival get’s going.
As well as this exciting announcement, Underbelly has also announced that Hannah Gadsby will return to Edinburgh for the first time since 2017 after winning the Edinburgh Comedy Award (and an Emmy) with their new show Woof! With The Front List – a new partnership between Underbelly and the Edinburgh Book Festival, also announcing a stellar line-up featuring Alan Cumming and Forbes Masson, Alice Oseman, Salman Rushdie and more. Massaoke celebrates it’s 10th year as the no. 1 party at the Fringe with Greatest Hits Live and Sing The Musicals. And finally returning favourites Foil Arms and Hog are hitting the 2024 Fringe, after selling out every year since 2009, with their new show Skittish a mix of sketch comedy, audience participation and improvisation.
Underbelly at the Edinburgh Fringe runs from 31st July – 26th August.
