Mischief Theatre go back to their roots by returning to the Edinburgh Fringe with three shows this year, one of those shows is ‘Mischief Movie Night’ where the audience are the directors of an improvised movie.
On the evening in which I attended, the genre was a heist film, ‘Otters Eleven’, where we had some very bad guys attempting to steal otters from the otter sanctuary. Safe to say it was a bloody masterpiece.
Charlie Russell was the host that evening, she was in charge of getting the audience’s input, commenting on the unfolding events and tempting to control or even be a catalyst to the chaos. She did a marvelous job and helped make the evening so much fun.
Despite the audience choosing the genre, narrative, and title of the movie, it is the incredible ensemble that drives the humour, action, and hysterically farcical narrative on stage. Henry Lewis, Harry Kershaw, Henry Shields, Dave Hearn, Lauren Shearing, and Susan Harrison make up this incredible cast, who leave the audience in stitches consistently throughout the performance. Whether it’s because of Susan Harrison’s wacky Otter devoted sheriff, Henry Shield’s hilarious otter, Henry Lewis’ & Dave Hearn’s crazy villains, or perhaps it’s because of Harry Kershaw’s fabulous cabaret performance. All of these elements left the audience in hysterics.
The real talent portrayed in this production is the improvisation skills of these performers, myself and the audience cannot fathom how they pull this comic brilliance together. Yes, there are mistakes and frantic moments that make no sense but that is absolutely all part of the fun, and gives the audience something to laugh harder about.
‘Mischief Movie Night’ is a fantastic production that takes the Mischief ensemble back to their roots of stripped-back comedy. The performers featured do an amazing job of making this such a hilarious evening for everyone, the performers included.
