‘An Untitled Love’ is Kyle Abraham’s dance exploration of Black love in America, set to the soundtrack of D’Angelo & The Vanguard. Abraham produces this contemporary production in collaboration with A.I.M and the Edinburgh International Festival, playing at Edinburgh’s King’s Theatre until Sunday 21st August.
The ensemble of dancers for this production showcase a versatile ability to communicate intimacy, emotion, friendship and love through various different styles of movement. There is also such nuance in their performance of the choreography where there is comedy, despair, and death. You truly feel connected to the performers as you see their independent narratives play out beautifully through moments where they tell the story as a collective or stunning solos which allow the audience to see the incredible talent featured in this production. The superb ensemble of dancers in this production are as follows; Jamaal Bowman, Tamisha A. Guy, Keerati Jinakunwiphat, Claude ‘CJ’ Johnson, Katherine Kirk, Jae Neal, Donovan Reed, Martell Ruffin, Dymon Samara and Gianna Theodore
Kyle Arabham’s choreography of this piece truly is diverse in the range of dance styles that have been utilized, where you see moments of street dance, ballet, latin and physical theatre all very much present to tell this poignant tale. At points there is a little bit too much going on stage which can be overwhelming for the audience to focus on, however, when we divert into individual journeys that focus is easily regained.
Multiple themes are tackled at the heart of this production, not only human relationships and love, but also racism, feminism and LGBTQ+ relationships. All of this together brings a beautiful representation of romance and friendship within the Black community, which the audience feels blessed to get an insight into.
Also, this production feels nostalgic, you very much feel like you are in the 90s with the style of music, costume and mannerisms of the ensemble. This creative decision makes this contemporary piece feel very different from any other dance theatre production in Edinburgh this August.
‘An Untitled Love’ features stunning choreography and a supremely talented cast that showcase endearing and beautiful relationships on stage through dance.
