Unfortunate: The Untold Story of Ursula the Sea Witch by Fat Rascal is a tell all musical that lets us in on the real story of Ursula from Disney’s The Little Mermaid. Ursula let’s the audience know her past, how she met king Triton, her wrongful framing and banishment for murder and a hilarious telling of her side of The Little Mermaid’s story. The musical is almost as if the whole thing is from Ursula’s brain, where she is a plus size diva who is the real hero and Ariel is a stupid, crude, rough-voiced cockney.
The show is great in the fact that it takes minimal set and and props but expertly use what they have to make the show feel like a much larger scale production. The lighting design was phenomenal and complimented each scene spectacularly whether just setting up the environment of the deep blue sea or cherry topping the wonderful musical numbers. The music itself was fantastically composed with the notes just a tad different to the notes in the original themes. The feel of the original music was present in the show’s soundtrack however it was still entirely unique in its composition. The title piece ‘Unfortunate’ was an absolute tune, it has elements of vogue, a rap and a killer hook that has been stuck in my head for the last week.
The actors were a credit to themselves Ursula was played magnificently and she really took lead of this production and grabbed the performance reins with both hands, an excellent show woman. Ariel and Eric were absolute scene stealers, they were incredibly funny every time they took that stage, their idiocy and physical comedy was unmatched. All of the actors were bar Ursula were double-cast as other roles and I know they were working their backsides off with their quick and seamless entrances and exits. This show is a must-see however, my one note of insignificant sourness is that one of the actors had clearly worn their stage shoes outside in the dreadful weather as they were all mucky. This problem affects my view of the show very little but just remember to keep your show shoes clean.
All in all ‘Unfortunate’ is anything but unfortunate, this is a stand-out show and already a best-seller, so snap up your tickets quick!
