‘A Working Title’ (The Space on the Mile) | Review by Saskia Werkhoven

The best thing to see after a whole of watching new writing is watching a play about writing and the highs and lows of it. Cramped with time, a young writer has to deliver a story of some kind to his boss, but hit with a torrential writer’s block, is faced with issues with what is new and fresh and comes to an emotional question of what we do for what we love in both our professional and personal lives.

A piece that feels so current to what we are facing on what to do that is not a sequel of an old franchise. Dealing with topics of what is appropriate and original, breaking the 4th wall and even a 5th and 6th as the characters interact with the writers of the story.

It offers a wonderful perspective on what Art can still be and in a festival like the Fringe, welcomes and delights us that all story telling is unique as long as it fits your voice. The writing is fast, comedic and incredibly emotional, tone of the piece varies but is well balanced.

This piece is performed by a small dramatic society from Manchester and demonstrates beautifully what a small group can do at a large festival and that is entertain and delight.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
