‘A Perfectly Average Glimpse into a Perfectly Average Day’ (ZOO Playground 2) | Review by Stacey Brown

A Perfectly Average Glimpse into a Perfectly Average Day is a collection of five very different monologues that exude dark humor. From an obsessive nosy neighbour to a bitter swimming coach to a pissed-off best man, Millie Haldane has taken very ordinary scenarios and created an extraordinary hour of theatre. Stripped back from technological fanfare, the mix of fantastic writing and performing make this a five-star show!

The brilliance of the show lies in its ability to take seemingly mundane characters and stories and transform them into something ridiculous and unsuspecting. The concept of only using monologues, although seemingly uncomplicated, is a breath of fresh air and showcases a variety of stories and actor abilities. Millie Haldane’s writing is absolute perfection! She speaks to human complexity and darkness but in the most hilarious way. She collaborated and developed the text alongside each actor to improve the piece and ensure they were involved in the creative process. I love this way of working and it’s benefits really showed as each actor seemed invested in the stories they were telling. I cannot wait to see more from Millie and I would love to pick her brains to see what other crazy stories she’s been conjuring.

The delivery of the actors was impeccable! With just their words and gestures, they bring to life characters that we already feel we know. Its a testament to their skill that they can evoke so much laughter with simple comedic timing and expression. Knowing now that they collaborated on the pieces, their fabulous performances make total sense. You can tell that each actor is embodied in the character and the story. The cast appear as follows Sam Klein, Margot Pue, Dylan Swain, Marcus Judd and Natalie Westgor.

A Perfectly Average Glimpse into a Perfectly Average Day reminds us that the ordinary is often the source of the extraordinary. In a festival that can be filled with spectacle and tech, this show proves that less is more. Witty writing and fantastic performances is all you need for a five star review.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
