‘Les Millénniables’ (The SpaceUK, Niddry Street) | Review By Lewis C. Baird

‘Les Millénniables’ is a spoof contemporary retelling of Victor Hugo’s iconic tale, surrounding millennials and the struggles they have faced within the 21st Century.

The American cast of this production showcase amazing talent through their versatile vocals, comic timing and general openness to embrace the farcical nature of this production. The energy they consistently provide carries the production and allows it to flow with pace. They also acknowledge the audience and at points depend their performance on the audience’s reaction which helps personalize the production for each person viewing this raucous comedy.

Ayla Glass and Kelly Lynne D’Angelo have written a satirical comedy which does bring Les Misérables into the 21st century, the parallels are at points hysterical, and it also does have it’s own creative spins which take this piece away from the source material. However, you can’t help but feel they are leaning too hard on some of the traits of the Cameron MacIntosh show and allowing that to dictate their own narrative rather than take creative license to change the story. One of the things that needs to be cut entirely or re-worked is the metaphorical deaths, they are one of the cringe-inducing moments of this production that could have more of a comical explanation or perhaps be an emotional beat, however instead they just make no sense and instead are just a device to mirror the original musical. The comedy is very cheesy, that’s not necessarily a bad thing, it does feel like a pantomime version of Les Misérables, and at points I wish they would lean further into that form of theatre as it could unleash more potential for the comedy to properly find it’s feet.

‘Les Millénniables’ is an enjoyable comedy show which has a band of great performers tackling Victor Hugo’s complex characters in a hysterical manner. Some more refined creative decisions could make this production a hit.

Rating: 3 out of 5.
