‘Here You Come Again’ (Edinburgh Playhouse) | Review By Lewis C. Baird

Dolly Parton has a new musical in town, ‘Here You Come Again’ features a versatile range of Parton’s discography hitting the Edinburgh Playhouse stage until Saturday 27th July. This story sees Dolly’s glam Country Western life collide with that of Kevin, an aspiring British comedian cooped up in his childhood loft bedroom, during the 2020 COVID lockdown. Can the magic of Dolly’s wisdom and lyrics break through Kevin’s deteriorating self-confidence?

Tricia Paoluccio is utterly bewitching as Dolly Parton. Paoluccio brings the showstopping persona, nuanced comedy and stunning vocals of the Country Western icon to life. Whilst there is a vast contrast in setting and situation to the world we are used to Dolly being in, Tricia truly embodies the star in every way possible, leaving the audience entranced, hanging on her every word. This isn’t just an impersonation of Dolly, this is a brilliant portrayal of a woman who has been through many hardships, yet sees light in everything and everyone.

Accompanying Paoluccio onstage is Steven Webb, bringing a simply incredible portrayal of Kevin. There are so many demands to the track of this character and the emotional journey Kevin goes on, yet Webb doesn’t miss a beat. The comedic element of this character is truly performed wonderfully, getting loud bellowing laughs consistently from the audience throughout the two hours running of the musical. With this there are so many heart-pulling beats to Kevin’s exploration of his true self and his future, tears are almost guaranteed – thanks to Webb’s empowering performance.

Aidan Cutler (understudy Kevin) and Charlotte Elisabeth Yorke (understudy Dolly), both supply sublime backing vocals and subtle portrayals of the supporting characters in this musical. The two performers showcase great versatility.

The actors are accompanied by an onstage band that make Dolly’s hits sound spectacular. The band are as follows – Jordan Li-Smith (Keyboard), Alex Akira Crawford (Guitar), Ben Scott (Drums) and Kevin Oliver Jones (Bass/Harmonica).

‘Here You Come Again’ has a rather outlandish narrative which on paper shouldn’t work. COVID has become a tired subject within theatre and media, with many of us fatigued and slightly traumatised from the whole ordeal. Yet Bruce Vilanch, Gabriel Barre and Tricia Paoluccio, with additional material from Jonathan Harvey have created a simply magical book that tells a tale of discovery and the power of music. Whilst at points the links to Dolly’s tracks are flimsy, the actual narrative which intertwines Parton’s life experience to Kevin’s is heartwarming and fulfilling. The reception from the audience at some of the key moments of Kevin’s journey is unlike anything heard from a UK audience, the show is an utter tonic.

Gabriel Barre directs this production by bringing realistic light and shade for Kevin’s world along with the glitter and confetti of Dolly’s world. Utilising Paul Wills’ ingenious and intricate set, bringing so much life to what could be a rather simplistic musical. Wills’ set design is complimented by Tim Deiling’s equally as intricate and vibrant lighting design. Lizzi Gee helps continue the energy through her fun choreography.

‘Here You Come Again’ is a brilliant new musical, that surprised this reviewer with it’s bold, hilarious and utterly captivating story. Dolly Parton’s hits are timeless, and this production is an ode to the star’s talent, and the power of music helping us through life’s hardships.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
