Stupid Sexy Poem Show is exactly what it says on the tin! It’s a spoken-word, comedy-cabaret filled with sexy jokes, self-deprecation and God complexes by the extremely funny and award-winning slam poetry artist Rosie Jo (RJ) Hunter. Articulating their experience as an emerging artist in the public-eye, we see RJ at their silliest and most vulnerable (as well as a kinky side too).
RJ is an expert at their craft. The vivid imagery, rhythm and flow and well-timed comedy mix together to create a 45-minute show filled with laughs. Each poem was very different from the last, meaning the audience were constantly engaged and hung on every word. A favourite of mine was a short poem dedicated solely to their love of hummus (clearly it resonated with me), which was soon followed by a poem dedicated to Baby RJ, a reflection on their youth and a love letter to their younger self. The versatility in the performance is what keeps this performance’s energy consistently high.
The humour is so well-timed and witty. RJ clearly has a knack for hilarity and their personality really shines through. There were heartfelt moments which revealed layers of vulnerability that you sympathised with and queer audience members could relate to. I believe this show will resonate deeply with a lot of people. The unfiltered truth and genuine expression of not only RJ’s world but other trans people, makes this performance a stand out in this year’s Fringe LGBTQ+ programme.
The authenticity of the show is so refreshing. RJ doesn’t shy away from revealing their true self. Their honesty creates an intimate relationship between the audience and performer. This truth mixed with well-timed comedy gave an edge to the performance which makes it a really interesting performance. As someone who doesn’t really listen to a lot of spoken-word, I was drawn in by the comedy and stayed for the clear talent. During a portion of the show where RJ reflects on trolling tweets, I could feel the ‘poetry magic’ radiating from the stage. To watch someone relish and thrive in their craft was thrilling to watch. RJ is clearly a massive talent and I cannot wait to see more from them in the future!
I would highly recommend this show to everyone, whether you’re well versed in poetry or not. It’s a laugh a minute production filled with silliness and authenticity created by such a talented individual. RJ, you’ve got a new fan!
