‘Sarah Hester Ross Is What?’ is a wonderful new show by the hilariously talented musical comedian Sarah Hester Ross. Ross rose to internet fame with her hilarious Tik Tok series ‘Florida Men’ in which she uses a date and googles; Florida Man (Insert Date) and turns whatever story comes up into a hysterical song.
The show kicks off with a chucklesome parody of Diana Ross’s ‘I’m coming out’ entitled ‘I’m serving C**t’, she bursts into the space kicking the show off with explosive high energy instantly setting the tone for the audience. I immediately felt at ease and comfortable, as did the rest of audience, the crowd itself was smaller however that did not hold Ross back she played to the room as if it was a full house. Ross had an excellent presence on stage that really made this comedy show a real showstopping performance, her timing was excellent that coupled with her brilliant use of multimedia and projection made for some truly funny moments.
Ross is a feminist through and through, and she lets you know in the best way possible, she effortlessly weaves comedy, music and social issues together to provide a humorous but impactful result with an important message. ‘Abortions are healthcare!’, is one chant we should all be shouting from the rooftops. Her light-hearted energy and humour brings a lot of humanity to these issues but her heart shone through when talking about the overturning of ‘Roe. V. Wade’ , comedy can be a great tool for change and she uses her tools well.
Comedy aside; Sarah Hester Ross is a fantastic musician, she is a singer that does comedy not a comedian that sings. Ross’s tone is beautiful, soulful yet gritty and the sheer power in her voice is awe inspiring. The musicality was obviously present, her pitch and range was off the charts fantastic, some of the runs Ross was pulling and power notes she was nailing left me clicking my fingers saying; ‘YOU. DID. THAT!’
I would be lying if I said I had anything I had notes on anything, Ross is a professional and you will know that when you come see this fantastic show. This show is a wonderful addition to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year and I recommend this show to anyone who wants a laugh and to hear a good tune or two, three, five, etc… The one thing I want to see next time in this show is a packed out room and a sold out show, this is what she not only deserves but has earned.
