The Odd Couple – Ten Feet Tall Theatre (The Craig Centre, Aberdeen) Review by Hannah Cook

Ten Feet Tall’s Ensemble Productions delivered a delightful rendition of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple (Female Version) at the Craig Centre for Performing Arts in Aberdeen. Set in 1985 New York, the play follows the comedic turmoil that ensues when free-spirited Olive invites the obsessively tidy Florence to move into her apartment after Florence’s marriage falls apart. The ensuing clash of personalities offers a humorous exploration of friendship and cohabitation. The transformation of the classic characters into their female counterparts adds a fresh perspective, with the group’s Trivial Pursuit nights serving as a backdrop for witty exchanges and comedic moments.

Jane Williams as Olive is effortlessly charismatic, nailing Olive’s dry wit and brash charm while hinting at her softer side. Beth Trigg as Florence is a comedic powerhouse, her obsessive neatness and anxious energy clashing brilliantly with Williams’ laid-back chaos. Their dynamic is the heart of the show.

The Trivial Pursuit gang delivers fantastic performances. Joann Watt as Mickey is sharp and no-nonsense, Rachel Watt as Sylvie brings biting sarcasm, Libby Taylor as Vera adds a delightfully ditzy charm, and Laura Brailsford as Renee balances warmth and wit. Each brings their own spark to the group’s hilarious interactions.

Ben Barclay as Manolo and Lewis Masson as Jesús steal scenes as the Spanish brothers, their exaggerated politeness and unintentionally suggestive remarks bringing some of the biggest laughs of the night. Their dinner scene with Olive and Florence is pure comedic gold.

Under Stewart Aitken’s sharp direction, the cast delivers a slick, high-energy production that keeps the comedy flowing while allowing moments of genuine heart to shine through. His staging in the round offers the audience different perspectives on the action, making them feel like they are sitting right in Olive’s apartment. This immersive staging choice enhances the dynamic energy of the play, ensuring that every audience member catches different nuances in the performances.

Ten Feet Tall’s Ensemble Productions has showcased its knack for delivering high-quality, engaging theatre with The Odd Couple (Female Version). The combination of sharp direction, a strong ensemble cast, and immersive staging made for an evening of big laughs and brilliant performances. If this production is anything to go by, future projects from Ten Feet Tall promise to be just as exciting.
