‘We Belong’ (Bare Productions) | Review By Stacey Brown

We Belong by Bare Productions is a cabaret show, showcasing their wonderful casts’ performing skills. Bare Productions unfortunately had to cancel all their performances over the last two years but they are back with a bang! We Belong is a fun filled, singalong evening for musical theatre lovers who need a taste of what we’ve missed out on.

The theme and driving force of We Belong is expression and being your authentic self. The show is split into three sections; showstopper, villainous and the yearbook. Expressing yourself is the motto of musical theatre, so they hit the nail on the head with that! From massive numbers where the character finally accepts themselves, to awkward high school teens figuring their lives out, Bare Productions covers a range of examples of their theme. Their choice of songs showcased their repertoire from classic Les Mis and Cabaret, to newer plays Everybody’s Talking About Jamie. Their song choice were a definite crowd pleaser, as you sang along to your favourites and took away some new musicals to discover.

Unfortunately, sound and microphone problems in the first act dampened the energy. Although the cast carried on and kept going, it was a bit awkward. This of course is an issue that all performers can relate to and sympathise with. However, in the second and third act the cast transcended and put on an amazing performance. The musical numbers flowed well together, so there were no awkward silences while they changed performers.

The cast are so talented! Their voices blend together so well. You Will Be Found from Dear Evan Hansen was my favourite performance of the evening. This number was beautiful and had you on the edge of your seat. It is lovely to see how passionate and hardworking all these performers are. A standout throughout for me was Rachel Anderson, in particular as Ursula. Rachel had a knack for comedic timing and that pantomime dame performance style. She was absolutely hilarious and had so much characterisation in all her performances; she really stood out.

We Belong by Bare Productions is a fun evening to enjoy some drinks and sing along to your favourite musical hits. It’s a bit cheesy and stripped back, but that’s what we love about cabarets and musical theatre in general. We Belong runs at The Three Sisters until 2nd of February and is available to watch online.

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
