Big Band Productions return to the Edinburgh Fringe with ‘Big Band Does Broadway’, playing every day at 22:30 in The Rose Theatre until 14th August.
This production is really special. It’s rare in the Scottish theatre industry that we are blessed to witness a successful cabaret, never mind one which features young performers that seem like they’ve came straight from a run in 54 Below on Broadway itself.
The cast in this production each take their turns at solos, duets and ensemble numbers, each of them shine and warrants their place on that stage. The vocal talent is sublime, belting numbers such as ‘Dead Mom’, ‘Seasons of Love’, ‘Easy Street’, ‘Being Alive’ and a stunning ‘Les Mis’ medley. There is such charm, emotion, comedy and pizzaz. The company of this production are as follows; Aidan Agnew, Ailsa Biggerstaff, Ali Robertson, Chris McLeish, Dannielle Logan, Fergie Fraser, Marc MacKinnon & Rachel White. If you are a casting director for a musical, note these names down and get their details because you’re going to want these versatile performers in your production.
Scott Coltman directs this production by giving audiences a classy and thoroughly entertaining evening. It’s so rare for something to encapsulate Broadway culture, however this production does that and then some. It’s a stunning affair which bewitches even the non-theatre goers within the audience.
Jonnie Grant’s arrangement drives the energy and really makes each number sound spectacular. The choice of music featured is perfection, at one point I actually thought Jonnie had taken inspiration from my Spotify account, it was hit after hit. Rachel Blaquière’s musical direction takes Jonnie’s arrangement and presents it beautifully, making each performer and the band sound their very best.
Dannielle Logan’s choreography is so diverse and brings such a range, embracing each style and genre, with a visual feast. Every inch of the stage is used and every emotional cue is hit, the epitome of sublime choreography.
‘Big Band Does Broadway’ is a must-see at this year’s Fringe for any musical lover. This is a stunning late-night production that takes audiences to the Big Apple and down an avenue of spellbinding music. The performers featured are undoubtedly future stars of our stage, so make sure to catch this intimate event with this talented ensemble before they themselves hit Broadway or the West End.
