‘Shoddy Detective & The Art of Deception’ (The SpaceUK on North Bridge) | Review By Matthew Attwood

Shoddy Theatre presents ‘Shoddy Detective & The Art of Deception’, a wildly funny and entertaining production centred around the mystery of a priceless stolen painting. A multi rolling, slapstick comedy that is entertaining from start to finish. Audiences can witness this wacky production from the 15th-20th August at the new venue TheSpace on North Bridge – Argyll Theatre (Venue 36).

As audiences enter the theatre they are greeted by the wonderful Luke Rose as Detective Brian Taylor. Rose’sbumbling shoddy detective embodies the art of landing jokes, presenting witty pun one after another. Jordan Strattonportrays the smooth talking Dusty Wills. Stratton plays the ex criminal now turned good guy assisting Detective Taylor’s investigation. Stratton’s performance excellently compliments Rose’s as the double act try to make way in their investigation, providing a great source of entertainment.Becky Bartram and Mitch Donaldson masterfully multi role as a slew of seemingly suspicious suspects of the missing portrait. Bartram easily shifts from Lady of the house toseductress to crumbling lady’s maid to intimidating cook and clueless old man. Providing wonderful physical comedy and various accents throughout Bartram shines in this production. Donaldson’s portrayals of Lord Raeburn/ DCI Sweetheart/ Roy and The Wymores are a delight and create bouts of laughter throughout the production and brilliant throwbacks toold comedy gags of the past. As a collective, the ensemble create a hysterical evening which is engaging from beginning from end.

Reminiscent of ‘The 39 Steps’, this team of talented writers comprised of Mitch Donaldson, Zach Devereaux, Oliver Mulvey, Lucy Wordsworth, Meg Froud and Josh Thompson have developed a brilliant, well thought through script, bursting at the seams with humour which acts a love letter to slapstick comedy.

I would highly recommend a ‘Shoddy Detective & The Art of Deception’ if you are a lover of slapstick comedy. You will not be disappointed by the brilliant performances in this production.
