‘The Richard Osman Fan Club’ from Warped Productions is playing Paradise in The Vault at 17:15 until 28th August (except 21st August). This 30-minute play follows elderly lady Greta and the young Adam as they discuss Richard Osman, plus try to find Greta a gripping tale for her new book inspired by Osman’s ‘The Thursday Murder Club’, could Adam be the answer Greta has been looking for?
Vanashree Thapliyal makes her debut as Greta, providing comedy both physical and verbal in such an engaging way. She makes this delirious character one which the audience engage with and further-more she takes the cues of the Richard Osman obsession to radiate comedy gold.
Steven Finley as Adam initially supplies comical physical humour as the uptight runner we all know. However, as the narrative unfolds we see the unhinged personality of Adam truly reveal its self so devilishly through Steven’s portrayal. This is a varied and engaging performance from Steven.
Wendy Lap’s script for this two-hander is filled with nods to Richard Osman’s book and of course his TV shows. The fact Wendy relies on action more than dialogue is refreshing, as this fringe we have had many plays which are too heavy on dialogue when it’s more energizing to see the characters move more physically than verbally. That being said, the twist in this plot is perhaps too obvious, it would have been nice to be more shocked by the clever reveal rather than it unfold rather slowly and obviously.
‘The Richard Osman Fan Club’ is a fun play that is lighthearted and plays on the current trend of murder mysteries.
