‘Nina Conti: The Dating Show’ (The Pleasance Grand) | Review By Lewis C. Baird

Nina Conti returns to the Edinburgh Fringe with her new show for 2022, ‘The Dating Show’. Nina Conti lends her fabulous ventriloquist skills to audience members who dare to declare they are single or in a relationship. Playing The Pleasance Grand until 28th August at 18:00.

Nina Conti is a very likable person with her bright and proper disposition, yet that’s what makes it even more hilarious when she outpours utter filth into the characters she is playing through her flawless ventriloquism. Monkey accompanies her on this new stint, and he is up to his usual antics, hooking audiences back into her hilarious routine.

When it comes to audience interaction, Nina tries her hardest to read the person she’s dragged up on stage and bring an exaggerated yet true persona of that person. There are moments where she triumphantly selects someone who is comedy gold and is so open to Nina’s antics.

Yet there are audience members who do suffocate the comedy, meaning Nina has to try her hardest to make them play the game. Some points this falls flat as it seems Nina is backed against the wall, and we find her trying to be polite, filtering any filth which would embarrass the audience member further, yet isn’t that part of the fun?

Nina Conti brings us a fun and comedy-filled new production, which at times could be perhaps a little more naughty, yet Nina is a delight to watch!

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.
