Holly Spillar: Hole (Underbelly: Bistro Square) | Review by Saskia Werkhoven

A microphone and a loop pedal is all that accompanies Holly Spillar on stage by the Underbelly hall. And it works like a charm. It becomes an extension of her as she gives a performance that highly memorable and lives up to its expectations of being hysterical and incredibly informative!

Spillar discusses the troubles of suffering from vaginismus – the tightening up of vaginal muscles when you put something into it, like a tampon – and explores through horrendous meet ups with men and judgemental doctor visits how to deal with this condition and understand why she has it. The one woman show deals with themes of expectations, womanhood, sex, pain and what makes us complete as human beings? All by bringing to light a topic in medicine that is so unique to people with a vagina yet brings all walks of life in the same room to engage with the conversation.

A mixture of humour, musicality and an endless array of brilliant facial expressions brings a new type of comedy that can only be experienced and enjoyed, and what a pleasure it would be to interact with our main character Hole more to embrace more of the community feeling! Spillar as a performer is magnetic and full of fun, even when things go slightly wrong – indeed, the loop pedal recorded more than it should have – she rolls with it and admits it makes it even more interesting. Truly remarkable and truly funny!
