Improv Therapy (TheSpace Triplex) | Review by Saskia Werkhoven

A concept that is interesting and cute – improvisation to deal with the things that are tough, emotional, embarrassing and make them comical and ensure trust in yourself and others. There is still some work to be done.

We find Megan McCaleb and Jeanette Caremi: two extremely positive and engaged performers who are very upbeat and want to change the world. They allow the audience to be free with their emotions and write down what they want and as much as they want. Audience participation is highly welcomed but it feels stiff and on both sides it takes some time to loosen up a bit. It is still enjoyable though daunting perhaps.

The introduction of improvisation exercises such as the Alphabet Game and therapy techniques like Puppets do give a fresh indication of where the show could go. With rehearsing and more audience participation in terms of actively doing improv could make it more fun. For people who are new to improv, this show is a good gateway into it, with the demonstration of the principles of improv (there is no such thing as No). A cute and fun way to end a day of seeing plays with as finishing touch a little of music to keep you going.
