If you’re looking for a camp as tits night out at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, then look no further than Liberace and Liza – A Tribute, playing at Underbelly Bristo Square in the Ermintrude theatre until 30th August.
Now, Liberace and Liza Minnelli never in fact performed together, but let your imagination run wild as David Saffert and Jillian Snow bring their portrayals of these two infamous icons to the stage. This glorious romp is more hysterical and entertaining than anything you will have imagined – I can promise you that.
Tribute acts have become a rather frowned-upon addition to the Edinburgh Fringe within recent years, but this is none of your Fake That or Atomic Blondie; this is a civilised and theatrical affair. With Saffert gracing the stage as Liberace initially solo in a gorgeous shimmering blue cape, where he builds good rapport with the audience before revealing his shimmering kilt and then blasting the piano with gusto. Saffert is a superbly talented pianist; all he needed was an equally talented singer to complement him – cue the entrance of Jillian Snow as Liza.
You would think Liza herself was there tonight, right enough, perhaps Liza after a little something something before hitting the stage. The pair kick off proceedings with a boisterous rendition of Cabaret, then deliver hit after hit with some Judy Garland, Britney Spears, Spice Girls and Chapel Roan. Jillian Snow’s vocals are simply stunning; not only do they resemble Liza’s so effortlessly, but they also fill the space and leave the audience speechless. Saffert is also an absolute wizard on the keys, with a notable moment being when he gives the audience a great jazzy interpretation of Bizet’s Carmen.
Throughout the full performance, Saffert and Snow exploit the intricacies of their portrayals of the icons to send the audience into hysterics. Coupled with golden one-liners and brilliant rapport between one another, the full thing is a farcical dream. Genuinely couldn’t think of a better way to round out a busy day at the Fringe.
Liberace and Liza – A Tribute is a highlight of this year’s Edinburgh Fringe, promising a glorious night out, featuring well-known musical numbers performed by two outstanding performers who match the talent of the icons they are portraying.
